U2 Concerts in Philadelphia, US and Cardiff, UK

by Tinna Karen Gunnarsdóttir

I think almost anyone who follows music will agree that this year, musically wise, U2 stood up as the big winner compared to any other musical events (the Live8 concerts being a special exception).

Being a big fan of U2 (and finally being "of age" to go see them live) I jumped at the chance to see them in person, got extremely lucky and got tickets to not one, but two concerts. Yay!

Incidentally, if you haven't seen them in concert yet, what in the world are you waiting for?

The first concert took place on May 22nd in the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, and the second one on June 29th in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Both were absolutely amazing. Words fail me, really, they were simple indescribable.

Both sets were similar in structure. Most songs were the same, the line-up was the same etc, but it still felt like two totally different concerts. The Philadelphia one had a totally different feel to it, than the Cardiff one. Oddly enough, it felt like one was better suited for Americans, and the other was better suited for the Brits. Being an Icelander myself, and fitting in neither group, I'd like to think I got the best of both worlds.

The concerts started with a bang. Lights everywhere and the coolest person in the world, Bono himself, got on stage and showed us what Vertigo is all about.

"Unos, dos, tres, catorce!"

Everyone screamed.

Two hours later we were still screaming.

I haven't been to too many concerts, but these two are the only ones I've been to where everyone attending knows every song, sings every line, jumps up and down and has a permanent smile on their face. It didn't matter if they were 10 or 60. Everyone participated.

It was like the greatest place on earth. And (to quote Titanic) "it was, it really was." Just thinking back makes me all smiley, my eyes a little teary and my tummy goes all tingly.

Take my word for it, it's the best show on Earth. Get tickets now!

And enjoy the show!

P.S. Just remember to drink plenty of water and bring throat lozenges with you for the aftermath ... you'll lose your voice, guaranteed. In Philly we must have sung "How long to sing this song..." over and over again for 20 minutes after U2 finally left the stage .. after two encores!
